Takefumi Doi

It was humans who drew the lines on the earth. People draw lines (boundaries) based on differences. These boundaries sometimes give rise to war and discrimination. But boundaries can also protect people. The Japanese have had a good relationship with boundaries. The same is true of the former Tate family residence in Nishimachi, Kameyama City. The boundaries along the highway are tightly closed off with latticework and fences, as if to prevent people from entering. However, once you step inside, the dirt floor stretches all the way to the back, and beyond that, the building and courtyard are loosely connected by an ambiguous boundary. A phosphorescent plastic chain is hung at the boundary between this building and the courtyard, making the boundary visible. The chain boundaries, reminiscent of a grid along a highway, divide what was previously a loosely connected space, turning it into a tightly closed space.

日常の風景に何かを付加することで、場所やモノの背景や理由を顕在化する作品を制作している。作品を見た鑑賞者が、自由な想像と感情を抱き、作品の意図を読み解こうとする行為こそが新たなアートへの向き合い方だと示唆する。使う材料やコンセプトは、本業が建設会社の設計のため、工事現場でよく目にする材料を使用し、建築設計をする際や日常業務の中で疑問に思うものを題材にしている。
